Katarina began to skate when she was five years old. Her talent soon became obvious and she was accepted to a special school that caters to children who have a passion for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. There she met her coach Jutta M ller. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captured the attention of everyone. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal in figure skating after a close-fought competition. Her victory four years ago was a lot closer. She actually lost the free skating competition, but was awarded the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short program. Witt was the only female ever since Sonja Haenie to win the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a film actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she did not take home a single gold medal, she was awed by fans even with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
